2021-04-16 · King Lear, tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, written in 1605–06 and published in a quarto edition in 1608, evidently based on Shakespeare’s unrevised working papers.

His banished daughter returns with an army, but they lose the battle and Lear, all his daughters and more, die. Overview. Shakespeare’s King Lear challenges us with the magnitude, intensity, and sheer duration of the pain that it represents. The once powerful King Lear chooses to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, and so begins one of Shakespeare’s most moving tragedies.
